Rome Taxi Scams: How to Avoid Paying Too Much
Most Rome taxi problems begin before the ride—not at the meter.

Use an official licensed taxi and clarify the ride before it starts. Check the vehicle, confirm whether the meter or an official predetermined fare applies, settle the payment method and ask for a receipt. If an unsolicited offer feels unclear, do not enter.
Recognize the Taxi First
Official Rome taxis are white, carry a TAXI roof sign and display identifying information including a licence number. Use an official taxi rank or request a licensed vehicle through a recognized service.
The vulnerable moment is often outside an airport or station, when an unsolicited driver offers an immediate solution before you have checked the vehicle or the conditions.
Convenience becomes expensive when identification comes second.
Clarify the Ride Before It Starts
Before luggage enters the trunk, state the destination and understand how the fare will be calculated. A city journey normally follows the meter; specific airport routes may use official predetermined fares.
Confirm card payment before entering if that is how you intend to pay. Do not wait until arrival, when time pressure and luggage make a simple misunderstanding harder to resolve.
Keep the Details That Protect You
At the end of the ride, check the displayed amount and request a receipt. The vehicle's licence number, plate and receipt matter if you later need to identify the journey or report a problem.
Not every expensive ride is a scam. Traffic, time, route and authorised supplements can affect the final cost. The warning is unexplained conditions—not simply a fare higher than expected.
