Do Taxis in Rome Take Credit Cards?
Yes, by law. Ask anyway, before you get in.
Official Rome taxis must accept card payments. The useful question is not whether the rule exists, but when to make sure it applies to your ride: before the car moves, not at the curb with your luggage in the trunk.

Yes. Taxis in Rome must carry a working card terminal and accept credit, debit and prepaid cards. Since June 2022, a driver who refuses a card payment can be fined. In practice, some still refuse: in a 2023 Altroconsumo test, 2 out of 20 Rome taxis declined the card. Ask before the ride begins, and keep a little cash as a backup.
Do Rome Taxis Accept Credit Cards?
Yes. Credit, debit and prepaid cards are accepted payment methods on official Rome taxis, and Italian rules require a working POS terminal on board.
Say how you intend to pay before you set off. A simple “Posso pagare con carta?” (Can I pay by card?) removes the doubt while changing your mind is still easy.
Knowing the rule is useful. Confirming it before the ride is better.
The Payment Mistake Happens Before the Ride Ends
At the destination you may be tired, outside your hotel and waiting for your luggage from the trunk. That is the worst moment to discover that payment has become complicated.
Confirm card payment before getting in. If the driver mentions a "broken" terminal, you can still choose another taxi from the rank.
The strongest payment decision is made before time pressure exists.
What If the Taxi POS Is Not Working?
A genuine terminal or connection problem can happen. It does not cancel the fare: you still have to pay, so a small cash reserve keeps a minor problem minor.
Check the final amount, ask for a receipt and note the taxi's licence number. Together they identify the journey if something needs to be raised later.
Card payment is only one taxi decision. The bigger risks in a Rome trip start much earlier.
