Should You Rent a Car in Rome?

A Rome car rental can solve the next part of an Italy trip while weakening every day spent inside the capital.

Quick Answer

No—most visitors do not need a car in Rome for sightseeing. Walking, taxis and public transport usually work better than driving in central Rome. Rent a car when leaving for countryside destinations that trains cannot serve well—not automatically when you land.

Do You Need a Car in Rome?

Rome sightseeing is concentrated across areas where walking, taxis and public transport often remove the need to park. A rental car adds cost while spending much of the trip unused.

The calculation changes outside the city. Rural Lazio, countryside accommodation and smaller destinations may give a car a clear purpose.

A car becomes useful when its real job begins—not simply because it is available.

Is Driving in Rome Difficult for Tourists?

Traffic, scooters, unfamiliar lanes and scarce parking make driving in Rome more demanding than a route estimate suggests. The greatest risk is often not movement—it is entering or stopping in the wrong place.

Rome ZTL zones regulate vehicle access by area, time and authorization. Cameras can record a rental car, and the rental company may later add an administration charge to the underlying violation.

A GPS route shows where a car can physically travel—not whether your rental car is permitted to enter.

Should You Rent a Car at Rome Airport?

Renting a car at Fiumicino or Ciampino makes sense when the road trip begins immediately. It is usually a poor default when your first stop is a hotel in central Rome.

Flight fatigue, luggage, rental paperwork, ZTL access and hotel parking become one dependency chain. If the car is needed only after Rome, compare collecting it when you leave the city.

Airport convenience can create several days of unnecessary city friction.

When Renting a Car in Rome Makes Sense

Consider a car for a countryside property, rural Lazio, Tuscany or Umbria when the destinations and luggage make rail connections impractical. For major city centers connected by fast trains, the same car may become another problem waiting at the next destination.

Decide where the car will sleep, not only where it will take you.
