Do You Need ETIAS for Rome?
Not yet. The dangerous mistake is trusting a website that claims you can already apply.

No. ETIAS applications are not currently open, so travelers do not need an ETIAS for Rome today. The system will eventually affect visa-exempt visitors travelling to Italy, including citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. Do not apply until the European Union opens the system.
Do Americans Need ETIAS for Rome?
Not for travel under the rules currently in force. When ETIAS becomes operational, eligible visa-exempt travelers will need the authorisation before entering participating European countries, including Italy.
ETIAS will not be a traditional visa. That distinction will not make an unofficial application site safe.
The requirement is future. The risk of acting on premature information already exists.
ETIAS and EES Are Not the Same
ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation. The Entry/Exit System—EES—is a separate border system that records eligible non-EU travelers when they enter and leave participating European countries.
Confusing the two can make travelers believe they missed an application or paid requirement. Seeing new border procedures does not mean ETIAS applications have opened.
A new border process and a future travel authorisation are two different decisions.
The ETIAS Website Mistake
Search results can place unofficial ETIAS services beside official information. A polished page may request passport details or payment before the real system is available.
Use only the European Union website on the europa.eu domain. Then verify the status again against your passport and departure date.
If a website accepts an application before the EU does, convenience is not the product. Your information may be.
