Yes. Most non-residents staying overnight must pay Rome city tax, normally per person and per night. Current rates depend on the accommodation category and commonly range from €4 to €10. Cash is not the only accepted method: card payment is supported, and the charge should be documented.
How Much Is Rome City Tax?
Rome tourist tax rates depend on the accommodation type or hotel category. Current hotel rates run from €4 per person per night at the lower end to €10 at a five-star hotel; a four-star hotel charges €7.50.
The room price does not determine the tax. The category, number of taxable guests and nights do. A fully prepaid booking may therefore still leave city tax to be collected by the hotel or host.
“Hotel paid in full” does not always mean “Rome city tax included.”
Do You Have to Pay Rome City Tax in Cash?
No. A property may prefer cash, but “cash only” is not a Rome-wide city tax rule. Roma Capitale recognizes and encourages traceable collection through credit card or debit card.
The tax may be collected separately or appear within the same card transaction as the room. What matters is that the amount remains identifiable on a numbered receipt or accommodation invoice.
A cash request is not proof of wrongdoing. An undocumented charge is the stronger warning sign.
Who Pays Rome Tourist Tax—and for How Long?
The tax generally applies to non-residents who stay overnight. Children under 10 are exempt, while other exemptions depend on specific personal or travel circumstances and may require documentation.
For most visitors, the charge applies for up to 10 nights. Cancellation, early departure, platform collection and a change of accommodation can alter what should actually be due.
The tax is real. That does not make every unexplained calculation automatically correct.
